What’s the difference between Balayage and Highlight?

By Allison Antonie

This may be a question you have asked or wondered about, especially with the trendy term “Balayage”. Or maybe you are completely unfamiliar with the word balayage. Throughout this blog I hope to make you feel more comfortable when calling to book your next hair color appointment with us at KLorraine Salon. Spa. Boutique.

Balayage: The word balayage comes from the french word “balayer”, which means “to sweep”. Balayage is a specialty technique where your stylist will sweep color starting on the ends of the hair upward on selected hair sections to lighten hair. This process is custom to the guest and requires an intense focus and thoughtful placement. The end result will provide a natural looking effect.

Highlight (foils): Highlighting is a technique used to lighten a weaved out section of hair from root to end, these weaved sections can vary in thickness depending on the guests wishes.

Which color will last longer?

The short answer would be balayage. Balayage can last you 3-4 months on average. The natural look, with less color applied to the roots is what makes clients feel the balayage lasts longer. However, the maintenance will change if you have a root color or “money piece”. A money piece is when you lighten the face framing pieces of your hair, this technique helps soften and brighten your complexion. Then you may want to touch up your color on average every 6-8 weeks or whenever you feel your grow out is noticeable.

Highlights, on the other hand, require a more frequent touch up. I would recommend getting a touch up every 6-8 weeks as you will see a more noticeable line of outgrowth.

 Which color will cost more?

Here at KLorraine, our highlights start at 140+ and balayage start at 180+. These prices do vary slightly depending on the amount of hair,  time it will take, the amount of color product needed, etc. We are happy to give a free consultation to any guest before booking your hair service to ensure you are choosing the best service suitable for you.

This question does play along with how frequent you will be getting your hair color refreshed as we discussed above. While a highlight is less expensive, the maintenance is usually more frequent and a more expensive balayage may last longer.
